How Bone Broth Has Helped Me Become a Better Mom, Wife, and All-Around Happier Person!

Even if you aren’t a veteran to the health food world, you have probably heard about bone broth. Cooking with bone broth is not a new thing; people have been using it for centuries. Recently, however, many people have been digging in a little deeper to see just how good for you bone broth is. Come to find out, there are countless vitamins and minerals in bone broth with benefits anywhere from boosting immune system to reducing cellulite.

My personal journey with bone broth started a few months ago. That was when I realized I needed to make a change to better myself. I wanted to start living a healthier lifestyle for myself and for my family. I hated being the mom that was always tired and ate $5 meals from fast food just because it was “fast.” Yeah, a fast way to throw your health away! Anyway, I figured the first place to start was a detox. I wanted to get rid of the toxins that were in my body.

That’s when I started searching around for a good detox treatment. My sister-in-law, who’s a nurse and health food junkie, mentioned bone broth when I asked her opinion on detoxes. I decided to try making it at home first. To my surprise, since the most tasty thing I can make is cereal, it wasn’t too bad! I made enough to drink it every day for a week. The second or third week was when I really started noticing the changes in my body.

As a mom, the first thing I noticed was the energy it gave me. Having the energy to run around and play with three boys — one 9, one 7, and one 4 — is priceless. The other major difference I noticed was with my skin. I admit, after cooking (trying to at least), cleaning, picking the kids up from school, then shuttling them to and from sports and activities, taking care of my skin was the last thing on my mind. So, it was a pleasant surprise when I started noticing clearer, more radiant skin. I did a little research and turns out the reason why is because of the collagen and gelatin that bone broth has in it. Who would have guessed?

I admit, drinking it straight every day does get a little old. That’s why I started adding it to my recipes at home. To my surprise, it tastes really good. Like, good enough for my husband and kids to eat it, which is a nearly impossible task. It has actually made me enjoy cooking again.

Now that I just finished month 3 using bone broth in some way every day, I have noticed changes that I didn’t think possible. Numerous Paleo followers have commended real homemade bone broth for its beneficial health properties and advocate the consumption of it on a regular basis. Though this has helped it to quickly gain more popularity in the paleo community, it’s still a nutritional powerhouse that a lot of paleo eaters haven’t yet started making use of. This is definitely something that anyone following the paleo lifestyle should be adding to their diet for all the nutrients and incredible health benefits.

It is well-known that bone broth contains a lot of key nutrients and minerals. Many of which are relatively non-existent in the modern western diet. These are essential for maintaining a healthy gut along with many other benefits such as improving skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite, supporting the immune system, joint health, stronger bones, and much more!

Ideally you will want to get your bones from grass fed beef or pork, free range poultry, or wild caught fish. Also, if you are lucky enough to have direct access to wild game meat/bones, it is excellent to use. This is because wild animals tend to have even healthier bones because they eat a diet that is truly right for their digestive systems and growth. Not only do their bones contain all the nutrients they need, but wild game also makes a delicious stock.

If you don’t have easy access to organic grass fed bones or wild game bones, or if you simply don’t want to take the time to go get them and make the broth/stock on your own, you can always purchase pre-made bone broth from a reputable source, but be VERY careful where you buy it from! We have included 3 places (in the above page link) that are real and legit. I would be very cautious if you decide to buy it from anywhere else.

Remember, a good broth will be gelatinous after it has been cooled. The concentrated stock, where a great part of the gelatin has been extracted from the bones, will be like a thick and gel when cold. You will want to heat it on the stove or by putting the container into very hot water. If at all possible, I try not to microwave it because I’ve heard this can kill off many of the health benefits – Though I don’t know for sure if that is true or not.

Once you have started enjoying this delicious liquid, you may find yourself using it in all different kinds of recipes or even as an energy drink! Also, if you want the fastest and most convenient way to add bone broth into your daily routine without any hassle whatsoever, then the protein powder supplement is for you.

Bone Broth vs Stock

If you are confused about bone broth vs stock then you are certainly not alone. There are a lot of questions (and even some debates) out there about the differences & similarities between the two. Sometimes the terms are even used interchangeably, and many argue they are one and the same. So, let me see if I can shed a little light on the subject without confusing you any more than you probably already are.

Bone Broth vs Stock: What are the differences, if any?

The fact is that they are very closely related, and depending on who you talk to or the recipe being used, they may even be the same thing; whether the person realizes it or not.

Ok, yeah, I know that didn’t help at all, but bear with me.

By pure definition, you can say bone broth is a stock because it is made by boiling bones, ligaments and connective tissue for extended periods of time, and has a thicker texture. That is essentially the definitely of stock. However, bone broth is slightly different from a normal stock because it is cooked much longer (up to 48 hours) to allow the full array of nutrients to be released from the bones.

But, in my opinion, these are the subtle differences:

Typically Stock is composed of animal bones — sometimes roasted and sometimes with some meat still attached (it’s a matter of preference) — simmered in water with vegetables & aromatics. It’s usually cooked for roughly 5 hours, then strained. The main goal of stock is to extract the collagen from the connective tissues & bones, which gives it the thick, gelatin quality you have probably seen before. Stock is almost never served on its own. Instead, it would normally be used to deglaze a pan, or as a base for rich sauces or gravies.

The base of Bone Broth is “stock-like” in that it is usually made from roasted bones — and can often still have some meat attached — with vegetables of choice. However, it’s cooked for a much longer period of time, usually 24 up to 48 hours, and the aim is to not only extract the gelatin from the bones, but also release all the super nutritious minerals — Thus making it a superfood! It is then strained and seasoned. It can be enjoyed on its own, made into soups, or used in sauces.

So, bone broth is differentiated by its thickness and exceptionally long cooking time, which gives it more nutritional value. A bone broth really cannot be overcooked (within reason) because the point is to break down all of the cartilage until there’s a lot of collagen-rich gelatin in the broth. What that essentially turns into is a protein that is great for you in so many ways!

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. The similarities between bone broth and stock are plentiful, while the differences are minor or even nonexistent in some circumstances. So, whether you are using bone broth or stock, it doesn’t really matter a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. The most important part is that you are eating healthy and incorporating this amazing superfood into your diet whenever possible.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion for you. I know, it’s still a confusing subject no matter how you try to digest it, but it’s not worth spending your energy worrying about it. Instead, I recommend getting or making some bone broth right now, so you can enjoy all the incredible health benefits as soon as possible!
